What plug adapter do I need?

Quick, practical answers for the places UK travellers go most: which plug each destination uses, whether you need a voltage converter, and what's worth packing to keep everything charged.

Cyprus, Malta and Dubai use the same three-pin sockets as the UK. Most of Europe needs a two-pin adapter, and the USA needs a different adapter plus a voltage check.

Plug guide

Spain

You need a European adapter with two round pins (Type C or F). Spain uses 230V, the same as the UK, so you won't need a voltage converter.

Plug guide

France

You need a European adapter with two round pins that also has a hole for the French earth pin (Type E). France uses 230V, so no voltage converter is needed.

Plug guide

Portugal

You need a European adapter with two round pins (Type C or F). Portugal uses 230V, the same as the UK, so you won't need a voltage converter.

Plug guide

Italy

A slim European adapter with two round pins (Type C) is the safest choice, as it fits Italy's Type F and most Type L sockets. Italy uses 230V, so no converter is needed.

Plug guide

Greece

You need a European adapter with two round pins (Type C or F). Greece uses 230V, the same as the UK, so you won't need a voltage converter.

Plug guide

Turkey

You need a European adapter with two round pins (Type C or F). Turkey uses 230V, so UK devices work without a voltage converter.

Plug guide

USA

You need a US adapter (Type A or B, with flat pins). The USA uses 120V, so check each device's label: most phone and laptop chargers are fine, but many UK hair dryers and straighteners aren't.

Plug guide

Cyprus

No. Cyprus uses the same three-pin Type G sockets as the UK, so your UK plugs will fit without an adapter.

Plug guide

Malta

No. Malta and Gozo use the same three-pin Type G sockets as the UK, so your UK plugs will fit without an adapter.

Plug guide

Dubai

Usually not. Dubai and the rest of the UAE mainly use UK-style Type G sockets, though you may occasionally find other types, so a universal adapter is a useful backup.
