A very funny group game that gets better with more players. The full box is bulky, but it becomes a much better travel game if you take only the cards and keep score on paper.

Groups, families, lots of players, laughter

Easy to play on a plane if you take just the cards rather than all the boxed components.
Can be played outside, although we'd avoid particularly windy conditions when using the cards.
Works very well as a family game. The rules are extremely simple, so children can join in without needing to learn complicated strategy.

The normal box contains tokens, the cow enclosure and cow, but these aren't necessary on holiday. We take the cards and can score on paper. The Moosic & Moovies expansion box is 14 × 18 cm and weighs 373 g, and the original cards can also fit inside it.
Yes — but we'd change the way we pack it.
Herd Mentality's normal box is around 20 × 27 cm and weighs 686 g, making it one of the bulkier games in our collection. If we had to take the complete box and every component, we'd have to think harder about whether it justified the suitcase space.
Fortunately, you don't need to.
The important part of Herd Mentality is the cards. The cow, enclosure and scoring tokens are fun components at home, but they're not essential when we're trying to pack efficiently for a holiday.
Take the cards and keep score on paper and Herd Mentality becomes a much more attractive travel game.
Herd Mentality is a very simple group game where the aim isn't necessarily to give the correct answer — it's to give the answer you think most other people will give.
That distinction creates most of the fun.
Questions generate discussion, disagreements and plenty of opportunities to discover that something you thought was completely obvious apparently isn't obvious to anyone else.
We'd rate the complexity just 1/5. You can explain what's happening extremely quickly, which makes it particularly good when you've got a mixture of regular gamers and people who don't normally play games at all.
Absolutely.
The game requires at least four players, but for us this is very much a case of the more, the better.
A larger group creates more interesting answers and makes trying to predict the majority much more entertaining.
That means we wouldn't necessarily take Herd Mentality on every holiday. If only two or three of us were going to play, we'd take something else.
For a family holiday or group trip with plenty of people around the table, though, it's one of our better options.
A single game takes roughly 15 minutes.
But as with several of our favourite holiday games, that doesn't really describe how long it can entertain us.
With enough people playing, we'd happily continue for an hour or two.
Because the individual questions change constantly and much of the entertainment comes from the people you're playing with, it doesn't feel as repetitive as some other very simple games.
Yes — if you pack it our way.
We certainly wouldn't try to arrange the full cow enclosure and all the scoring components across aircraft tray tables.
Take only the cards, however, and things become much simpler.
You can read the questions, give answers and keep score separately without needing much physical playing space.
That makes the stripped-down version surprisingly practical for travelling.
This is where Herd Mentality becomes particularly interesting for us as a holiday game.
The standard 20 × 27 cm box isn't something we'd particularly want taking up suitcase space.
We also own the Moosic & Moovies version, which comes in a much smaller 14 × 18 cm box weighing 373 g. The useful part is that we can fit the original game's cards into that smaller box as well.
That gives us a convenient way of taking both sets of questions without carrying the full original packaging.
Even without that smaller box, we'd be perfectly happy putting the cards into another suitable case and keeping score on paper.
For us, Herd Mentality works very well as a family game.
The rules themselves are extremely simple, and there's no complicated strategy for younger players to learn.
Much of the entertainment comes from knowing the people you're playing with and trying to predict what everyone else is going to say.
That makes it particularly well suited to a family or group holiday.
As sold: not particularly good.
Cards only: very good.
That's an important distinction.
We wouldn't automatically rule out a game because its retail box is large. Instead, we look at which components are actually necessary to play it.
For Herd Mentality, removing the bulky scoring components transforms its usefulness for travelling.
Herd Mentality is an excellent holiday game when you're travelling with a larger group.
It's extremely simple, gets better as you add more players and can easily keep us entertained for an hour or two despite individual games being relatively short.
The standard box is much larger than we'd like for travelling, but that's an easy problem to solve.
Take the cards, leave the cow and enclosure at home, and keep score on paper.
Packed that way, Herd Mentality gives us a lot of group entertainment without demanding anything like the luggage space suggested by the retail box.
